FAQs

  • How many bank holidays are there in India in 2026?

There is no single all-India number, because bank holidays are notified state-wise under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. Every location observes 3 national gazetted holidays, all Sundays and the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month, plus regional festival holidays – typically 10–15 additional days depending on the state.

  • Which are the national bank holidays in India in 2026?

Three holidays are observed by banks nationwide: Republic Day (26 January 2026), Independence Day (15 August 2026) and Gandhi Jayanti (2 October 2026).

  • Are banks closed on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays?

Yes. All scheduled and non-scheduled banks in India are closed on the second and fourth Saturday of every month, in addition to every Sunday. The 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays are normal working days.

  • Are UPI, NEFT, RTGS, IMPS and ATMs available on bank holidays?

Yes. Digital and payment services – UPI, IMPS, NEFT, RTGS, ATMs and bob World internet & mobile banking – operate 24x7, including on holidays and weekends. Only in-branch services and physical cheque clearing are paused.

  • Does cheque clearing happen on a bank holiday?

No. Physical cheque clearing does not take place on bank holidays, Sundays or the 2nd and 4th Saturdays. Deposit time-sensitive cheques a day or two earlier to avoid delays.

  • Why do bank holidays differ from one state to another?

Because holidays are declared under the Negotiable Instruments Act via state government notifications. India’s regional festivals differ, so a festival that is a holiday in one state may be a normal working day in another. Always check the list for your specific state or city.

  • Are festival dates such as Eid, Holi and Diwali fixed?

No. These follow lunar or regional calendars, so the dates shift each year and some – particularly Eid – depend on moon sighting. Always confirm the exact date against the official RBI Holiday Matrix or the state-wise list close to the date.

  • Is 1 April a bank holiday?

In most states banks remain closed to the public on 1 April for the annual closing of accounts. Plan any financial-year-end transactions ahead of this date.

  • What is the difference between a bank holiday and a public holiday?

A bank holiday is a day on which banks are closed as notified under the Negotiable Instruments Act, affecting branch services and cheque clearing. A public holiday is a broader government holiday for offices and institutions. The two overlap but are not identical, which is why some public holidays are still bank working days in certain states.

  • Where can I find the official Bank of Baroda holiday list for my state?

Download the state-wise Bank of Baroda holiday list from this page, or check the RBI Holiday Matrix (rbi.org.in) by selecting your city/region. For branch-specific confirmation, use the Bank of Baroda branch locator or contact your home branch.
